Hypothesis 3

There is a correlation between a teacher placing students at the heart of their practice and their overall teaching effectiveness.

...

Teachers who centre their teaching and practice around students, are able to deliver learning more effectively and engage their students in different circumstances.

Patterns

Teachers who were effective in sustaining learning during adversities, exhibited the following patterns :
  • defined their teaching purpose as centred around students or the society
  • measured the success of their class based on student understanding
  • had the mindset to learn on their own or/and from their students
  • had the capacity for reflection around student learning & their own teaching methods
  • had the ability to personalise instruction to individual student needs
  • focused their teaching on holistic, not just academic development of students

Insights

These practices, exhibited by the Advocates, Nurturers and Catalysts, show the impact of placing the student at the heart of their teaching practice. They were able to deliver learning and engage students even during the pandemic.

The Go-Getters, despite making high efforts, fail to teach as effectively, especially during adversity. The fact that their teaching practice is largely centred around their personal goals and growth becomes a hinderance in their effectiveness.

Ruminations

We wonder what impact would it have if during their pre-service training itself, teachers were introduced to a student-centric definition of 'being a teacher'. Additionally, this of course would need to be supplemented with pedagogical approaches and techniques that helped them bring such student centricity into the classroom.

We also wonder if high-motivation teacher personas like Go-Getters can become more effective if such a meaning shift is created in them through in-service training.
