Purpose of this Research

Inside the Staffroom aims to humanise India's teachers and examine existing teacher training approaches against a more behavioural approach.
Policies like the NPST (National Professional Standards for Teachers) set clear standards for what teachers should achieve and how they should progress. However, they do not capture the everyday motivations, barriers, and opportunities that shape different teachers and their learning appetite. Without these factors, teacher development risks becoming generic and disengaging, with limited impact and minimal transfer of learning into classrooms.
Inside the Staffroom attempts to fill this gap. Through six evidence-based teacher personas we offer a way of thinking about teacher development that goes beyond one-size-fits-all training.
This is not a final solution or framework but a starting point. These personas are simply a storytelling tool to help understand the different needs and barriers that hinder teaching quality.
The project also highlights some relationships we noticed between factors like how a teacher defines teaching and their teaching quality; how a teacher plans sessions and their teaching quality etc. These have been framed as hypothesis statements for further research.
We believe this project can lead to the creation of a dynamic competency based framework for teacher development that assesses what each teacher really needs to undergo behavioural transformation and suggests personalised learning pathways for them.
