Purpose of this Research

Inside the Staffroom is a tool to understand Teachers of India from a behavioural lens. As the NEP 2020 (National Education Policy) implementation takes swing, there is an ever increasing focus on teacher development programs across the country. Adding behavioural factors as a consideration when designing and implementing such programs can vastly increase their efficacy and impact. 

Policies like the NPST (National Professional Standards for Teachers) set clear standards for what teachers should achieve and how they should progress. However, they do not capture the everyday motivations, barriers, and opportunities that shape different teachers and their learning appetite. Without these factors, teacher development risks becoming generic and disengaging, with limited impact and minimal transfer of learning into classrooms. 

Inside the Staffroom attempts to fill this gap. Through six evidence-based teacher personas and cross-sectional Deep-Dives, we offer a way of thinking about teacher development that moves the teacher training ecosystem, beyond one-size-fits-all training focused on just competencies. Instead, it shows a pathway for true behavioural transformation. 
  
This is not a final solution or framework but a starting point for dialogue and further design through collaboration.

Who this Resource is for

This resource is for teachers, educators, school leaders, policy makers, government officials and NGOs working to help teachers upskill to be ‘21st century facilitators’, as envisioned by the NEP. It is also for anyone else who is curious to see how personalised growth behaviour journeys can look like for teachers. 

Please keep in mind that we see this resource as a way of thinking, not a final solution. The direction we suggest is to advance this work further, exploring how the needs of teacher motivation and the ecosystem in which they function, can be assessed alongside their skills.
